Go Beyond Recording with Audio Recorder
Windows is a powerful OS with loads of free tools bundled but some of them are really very basic. Sound recorder is a great example it can indeed make a sound file from your microphone input but that?s it. Fortunately you can step up your recording game without any hassle using EZSoftmagic?s Audio Recorder. This can record different formats and manage the quality plus there?s a free trial.
Better Sound Control
Audio Recorder is a definite step up from the default Microsoft sound recorder. You can record any sounds from your sound card not just mic inputs allowing you to save music and audio from various sources. This already makes it far more useful. You can record directly to MP3 and OGG formats too not just WAV. You have a few nifty extra features too such as the ability to pre-set a time for recording or detect silence so that it only records when it picks up sound. You can alter the recording bitrate quality and even preview before you record.
Sounding Good
Audio Recorder will definitely improve your recordings and give you more control. On the downside the interface is quite cluttered and takes some working out. However you really do get more features and it?s surprisingly useful. The main benefit is a choice of input source for recording from the web for example.

The best audio recording app on the Mac.
I can't understand how anyone can rate this down. It is an amazing app, written nearly 10 years ago, and it *still* works fantastically on the latest version of OS X. It's robust, reliable, allows for multiple file formats, can buffer and record segmented files, and despite all of this, it is free. There are nicer looking alternative such as Rogue Amoeba's Piezo, but even with that you are paying $19 and don't have the ability to record uncompressed audio. This app is no longer supported, however I just hope it continues to work through Yosemite updates and beyond.
